Former child actor Macaulay Culkin is set to return to the Home Alone film franchise in which he first found fame 36 years ago. He is reported to be in advanced talks with Disney studio chiefs over a reboot of the blockbuster series that turned him into a Hollywood star at the age of 10.
“They are courting him like nobody’s business,” according to podcaster and LA showbiz writer Matt Belloni, who adds that a revival of the beloved Home Alone series “would be gigantic.
Culkin, who turned 46 last week, captured the hearts of millions worldwide in the original comedy blockbuster back in 1990 as a young boy who defends his suburban home from invaders after his parents and siblings accidentally leave him behind as they set off on a family holiday.
He also starred in the first sequel Home Alone 2 two years later but did not appear in any of four more episodes between 1997 and 2021. The entire franchise is now owned by Disney following its acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019.
“In an era of one reboot after another, the Disney hierarchy believes it would be a major coup to get the original and still much loved star of the first two – and most successful – Home Alone movies back on board,” a senior Hollywood production executive confirmed yesterday.
“Obviously, there will have to be some kind of plot flip whereby Macaulay’s famous character is now grown up and has a kid of his own. I know he’s been discussing all this with Disney, so a firm deal isn’t far away.”
