Editor’s note: Ahead of Tuesday’s election, MPR News political editor Brian Bakst asked Minnesota candidates for governor Amy Klobuchar and Lisa Demuth about the personal experiences that shaped their politics. Here’s Klobuchar. Click here for Demuth.
Amy Klobuchar once thought she’d be a librarian, but then public service came calling. Stuck in the middle of a hospital-insurance battle after her daughter was born with serious health problems, citizen Klobuchar pressed state lawmakers for a law guaranteeing new mothers a 48-hour hospital stay.
In that work, she found “you could do good simply by raising your hand and showing up.” It got her interested in running for office.
More than 30 years later, the DFLer could become Minnesota’s first female governor on Nov. 3.
