An AI enthusiast has managed to get ChatGPT’s latest -6 Astra model to complete the video game Portal all by itself, but it cost a fair bit of cash to pull off successfully.
As reported by videocardz, YouTube user cozyblaze uploaded the two-hour long playthough to their channel, which shows Portal being completed from start to finish entirely using prompts from ChatGPT. Cozyblaze connected up the game to ChatGPT, which paused the game and took screenshots before sending prompts and receiving back inputs to move the character forward.
While the final uploaded video is just under two hours long – roughly the same amount of time it takes to complete Portal normally – the actual experiment lasted for almost an entire day. The time taken to screenshot, send prompts and receive input information back actually took way longer than the final video shows.
So, how much does it cost to have a computer take 24 hours to complete a 20-year-old game for you? Well, cozyblaze rocked up a bill of $571.33 in API costs, with OpenAI charging users for cumulative use of its most up-to-date AI models.
Given the lengthy time it took to complete a relatively simple game, and the operating costs involved, it doesn’t look like we’re going to see AI game players any time soon. However, given how far AI generated videos of Will Smith eating spaghetti have come in the last few years, it wouldn’t surprise me if this isn’t the last time we see an AI complete a video game.
Previously, we’ve seen the likes of Sony patent AI features that could see gamers pass their controls over to an agent if they get stuck on a particular part of a game. In theory, we could see features such as this baked into consoles of the future, meaning I might finally be able to make it to the end of Elden Ring.
