Naughty Dog, the developer behind The Last of Us and Uncharted, has shared a promising update about the state of its next game – Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet – and it could mean we see more of it sooner than we first thought.
Over on X, Naughty Dog recently shared an image of the actor for Intergalactic’s main character, Tati Gabrielle, in full motion capture getup. The caption reads: “That is a wrap on the very ambitious Intergalactic cinematic shoot! This cast killed it! Cannot wait to show you their incredible work when the time is right!”
The caption also includes a reference to Cowboy Bebop, reading, “See you, space cowboy…”. This potentially hints at some of the inspiration that Naughty Dog could be taking for this sci-fi adventure.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet was first announced back at The Game Awards in 2024. Over 18 months later, we’ve heard nothing new about the project, with Naughty Dog fans hankering for its next big project after The Last of Us Part 2 in 2020.
Now that the studio has confirmed that filming of the cinematics has been finalised, players and fans are starting to speculate that the release date might not be as far away as we might think.
According to IGN’s Cade Onder, The Last of Us Part 2 reached a similar milestone in April 2019. It was then released in June 2020, although it was actually supposed to release a little earlier in the year, delayed for both polish and due to the covid pandemic.
Of course, Intergalactic could be operating on a completely different schedule, and given how much more complicated games are to make these days, we could still be waiting a few years before the game actually launches.
Still, the rare update from Naughty Dog has given fans hope that we’ll see more of the game before the year is out. Sony has just announced a State of Play for this Thursday, September 3 – could the ‘right’ time in fact be this week?
There’s also every chance that we see more of the game shown off at The Game Awards 2026, two years on from the game’s initial reveal.
Only time will tell. Given we know very little about the title’s gameplay and story, we’ll be keeping a very close eye on every new Sony presentation going forward.
