Fans simply cannot heap enough praise on this “masterpiece” war film, which is currently available to stream on Netflix.

All Quiet on the Western Front was released in 2022 and is an anti-war film adapted from the novel penned by Erich Maria Remarque in 1929. The story has been brought to the screen twice previously, but viewers are adamant the 2022 version is the finest ever produced.

Co-written and directed by Edward Berger, All Quiet on the Western Front chronicles the devastating story of a young German soldier, Paul Baumer, who volunteers to join the Army alongside his friends.

However, when he’s confronted with the brutal realities of warfare, his initial aspirations of returning home a hero are destroyed and all he can do is struggle to survive the horrifying conflict.

The film received widespread acclaim upon its release and secured nominations for several awards including a Golden Globe and a Critic’s Choice award. All Quiet on the Western Front earned an extraordinary 14 BAFTA Award nominations in 2023, ultimately winning Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Sound, reports the Mirror.

It also received nine Oscar nominations and claimed four victories including Best International Feature Film, Best Original Score, Best Production Design and Best Cinematography. Film review platform Rotten Tomatoes bestowed an outstanding 90 percent rating upon the picture.

One critic said: “While All Quiet has fittingly been lauded for its technical achievements–it’s…cruelly intimate moments that allow this latest adaptation of Remarque’s novel to find new resonance and potency nearly a century after its publication.”

A second noted: “All Quiet on The Western Front is a powerful and poignant treatise on the hopelessness of war that unearths newfound splendor in the ravaged battlefields of France.”

While a third added: “A Phenomenal dive into the trench warfare of WW 1 that hasn’t been seen like this. While this is the third adaption of the story nothing can prepare you for the brutality, heart, and inside look within this war from a whole new perspective.”

Audiences were similarly won over by All Quiet on the Western Front. One viewer wrote: “The best movie about war for me, because it shows the horror of the war, the reality of would probably happen if go to the battle field, you’re not going to be special or any divine creature to save you when you get shot. The movie has a great story based on a book with the same title. The actors are awesome, you can see what the characters are feeling without a word, just by their expressions.”

Another added: “All Quiet on the Western Front is absolutely devastating-and that is precisely why it works. There are no glorious charges or romantic ideas about warfare here. You watch young men enter WWI filled with excitement and patriotism, only to discover mud, hunger, terror, artillery, mutilation, exhaustion, and death on an industrial scale.

“The contrast between politicians discussing borders and soldiers dying for a few yards of ruined earth is especially powerful. What struck me most is how quickly the war strips away everything these young men thought it would be. Eventually survival itself becomes the only meaningful objective. Bleak, beautifully filmed, horrifying, and deeply effective. It’s less a celebration of soldiers than a condemnation of what human beings were asked to endure.”

A third viewer wrote: “Cinematically sharp and visually powerful, All Quiet on the Western Front pulled me into the world of World War I trench warfare. The strong acting and immersive setting kept me engaged, making me feel as though I was experiencing the harsh realities alongside the soldiers.

“The events felt grounded and realistic, capturing the brutality, fear, and exhaustion of life in the trenches. Based on the 1929 novel by German World War I veteran Erich Maria Remarque, the film offers a haunting portrayal of the human cost of war.

“Watching 1917 just before All Quiet on the Western Front gave me a deeper understanding of World War I by showing different perspectives of the conflict. While 1917 captures the experience of British soldiers on the Allied side, All Quiet on the Western Front portrays the German perspective. Together, they show that regardless of which side a soldier fought for, the reality of trench warfare was filled with fear, loss, and unimaginable hardship.”
