I recently bought my first home, and if there’s one thing I’ve discovered about designing an interior space, it’s incredibly tricky to do tastefully when you’re into gaming. Most ‘gamer centric’ pieces these days are styles with aggressive angles and RGB lights that make your home resemble a German nightclub rather than a cosy space to dig into some video games.

IKEA looks to change that with a new range of products on the way in a collaboration with Xbox. Launching at the start of October, the YXSTABY collection brings together nine piece of homeware and furniture that range from subtle nods to the gaming hobby to functional pieces that are sure to elevate your next co-op night in.

The larger, more practical pieces start with the gaming lounge chair, the gaming TV stand, and the gaming side table. With light and airy designs, these pieces are designed to be functional while remaining easy to move around and store when not in use.

I’m particularly a fan of how both the TV and cabinet are built with castor wheels at the base, making them super easy to move around your space. When hosting people over for local co-op nights, it can be tricky to make sure everyone has the best view from the typical sofa and TV layout, and I can see this being popular among those with larger spaces.

If you need a couple of extra seats, IKEA is also bringing a couple new new stools to the catalogue. Available in both green and black, these are shaped exactly like the contoured thumbsticks you’d find on an Xbox controller.

This is a slightly less subtle gaming reference, but they could be a great corner piece if you’re ok with showing off your love of gaming to prospective visitors. The jury is still out on how comfy these things will be, but as a quick perch for a quick gaming session, they look to be ideal.

Those sticks aren’t the only part of the controller that you can find in the new YXSTABY collection. One variant of the D-pad is coming as a green cushion, while the more modern octagonal D-pad will be available as a console table platter.

Again, these are great gaming references for those who are in the know, but anyone who isn’t into the hobby likely wouldn’t think twice about them.

Last up, there are three pieces that are likely to be huge hits among those who like to stay organised.

My favourite of the bunch is the YXSTABY gaming controller display box, which comes in black or white. It’s lined with mirrored pieces on the inside and is perfect for fitting a controller into.

These will be great for those of us who like to collect the more extravagant controller designs that Xbox make. I’ve got a special edition Starfield pad that I know will look excellent when displayed on the wall next to my desk, acting as decorating while remaining within arms reach when I need it for gaming.

There’s also a storage box that doubles as a gaming laptop support for those laptop gamers, as well as a gaming monitor stand that comes with a couple of hangers for controllers.

Explaining how IKEA approached the collaboration with Xbox, product design developer Philip Dilé said: “How people play at home has shifted, and it is as much about relaxing and connecting with others as it is about performing, which changes what the space has to do. XBOX knows what players need from their gaming setup, and we know how to solve the small problems that come with adapting that to everyday life at home. Together, we set out to make furniture people really want in their home, not furniture they accept because it is what you need to game.”

Meanwhile, head of design at Xbox, Carl Ledbetter, said: ““At XBOX, we think a lot about what helps players feel immersed in a game. The hardware is an important part of that, but so is the world you create around it. Working with IKEA gave us the opportunity to design for the entire gaming experience at home, from the screen to the space around it.”
