Back in 1994, Mike Newell directed Richard Curtis’ rom-com screenplay that was made in just six weeks for under £3 million. Incredibly, Four Weddings and a Funeral became the highest-grossing British film in history at the time, with a global box office take of over £218 million.
The wonderfully British film stars Hugh Grant as the bumbling Charles, following him and close friends through (you guessed it) four weddings and a funeral. Over the course of which, he keeps bumping into Andie MacDowell’s Carrie, who he’s taken a liking to.
Four Weddings and a Funeral ended up being Oscar-nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, while Grant shot to international stardom after his Golden Globe and BAFTA Best Actor wins. Meanwhile, the very British flick also bagged the BAFTAs for Best Film, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress for Kristin Scott Thomas. Today, the much-loved movie features high up in polls of the greatest British films and best comedies of all time.
